There are some niggling issues with performance and balancing, but a few updates and tweaks will hopefully patch those up soon. It has learnt from many of the mistakes that recent iterations such as 2017’s Payback have made, while also bringing it back to the roots of Underground and Most Wanted. Need for Speed Heat is a return to form for the beloved nitrous-fuelled, decal-wearing, neon-lit driving franchise. The cars spit and roar, the environments glisten and pop under the neon night lights, and the framerate keeps pace with the break-neck speeds.

Hopefully they can be patched out in early updates, though, because with the exception of those bugs, the performance was excellent on the PS4 Pro.

A handful of story races got stuck loading just after completion, requiring a restart and wiping all progress against those missions. The only other issues I had in my 20-plus hours with Need for Speed Heat were a few mission-ending bugs. Thankfully, you can change the difficulty between Easy, Medium, and Hard, but the police are still much harder relative to the races for each difficulty. This puts a lot of unnecessary strain on the early hours, as the punishment for getting caught is exceptionally harsh. The heat levels don’t seem to scale to your level for the first 10 hours or so, it can be difficult to escape even a heat 1 or 2 chase, but these will be complete walkovers once you’ve torqued and tuned your vehicle.
